MULTIDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE ON SINKHOLES & ENGINEERING & ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF KARST

The First Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst was held in Orlando, Florida, October 15-17, 1984. Subsequently, a second and third conference was held under the sponsorship of the Florida Sinkhole Research Institute, a division of the University of Central Florida in Orlando, in 1987 and 1989. In 1992, Dr. Barry Beck, the former director of the Florida Sinkhole Research Institute, jointed the staff of P.E. LaMoreaux and Associates and opened the company's Oak Ridge, Tennessee office. Beginning with the Fourth Multidisciplinary Conference in 1993, PE LaMoreaux and Associates has sponsored the continuation of this important series of conferences.

These conferences were established to meet a critical need for applied research information on the very complex hydrogeological environment of karst areas of the world. Special areas of emphasis include:

  • Analysis of the framework and mechanism of sinkholes
  • Evaluation of sinkhole - susceptibility and risk assessment
  • Physical description sinkhole features
  • Societal impact of sinkholes
  • Engineering in sinkhole-prone areas
  • Groundwater flow and contaminant movement in karst
  • Stormwater runoff and flooding in karst
  • Groundwater monitoring and management in karst areas
  • Application of geophysical methods to karst
  • Legal and regulatory aspects of karst
